Three reasons to keep your garage door in good condition

Blog

Many homeowners pay very little attention to the condition of their garage doors. However, there are several important reasons why you should have this item regularly serviced, and repaired by a garage door repairs specialist when necessary. Read on to find out what these reasons are.

To reduce the risk of a burglary

If your garage door is damaged in some way or has deteriorated as a result of a lack of regular maintenance, it could be very easy for a burglar to break it open and gain access to all of the valuable goods you store inside your garage.

For example, if the metal hinges on the door are damaged by corrosion, a reasonably-strong thief could pry the door off these weakened hinges with a crowbar in a matter of minutes.

As such, if you routinely use your garage to store valuable items (such as a vehicle, sports equipment or gardening tools), then it's vital to have any damaged or deteriorated sections of its door repaired promptly.

To prevent the items you store inside the garage from being damaged

If you store any items in your garage that could be damaged by moisture, it is essential to keep the door to this space in excellent condition.

If a garage door develops a hole as a result of wet rot (in wooden doors) or corrosion (in metal doors), it could lead to rainwater seeping into the garage. This, in turn, could lead to any clothing, paperwork or other delicate items that are housed inside this area ending up destroyed by moisture and mould.

Given this, should you spot any gaps (however small) in your garage door, you should contact a garage door repairs specialist immediately.

To maintain the value of your home

The garage is usually a highly visible structure; as such, its condition can affect the overall appearance of a property's exterior. This, in turn, can have an impact on the property's value as a whole.

If your garage door is severely corroded or is covered in peeling, discoloured paint, then it could make your home exterior look dilapidated and neglected, and in doing so, could reduce the property's 'kerb appeal' (that is, how attractive and appealing your home looks from the outside).

As such, if you are considering putting your property on the market at some point, it's sensible to maintain your garage door. Use oil to lubricate and protect its metal components (such as its springs, hinges and locks) and have any visible damage repaired promptly. Additionally, you should have it repainted or re-varnished at least once a year.

Opening and Closing Garage Doors

Hello. My name is Benny and I would like to talk to you about the steps you should take if your garage door will not open or close. I am not a professional garage door repair guy, but I have had the pleasure of seeing one of the finest garage service contractors in Sydney at work. I called out the contractor when I discovered that my garage door wouldn't open or close. It was completely stuck. I called the contractor who came out and started to work on the door. He taught me some really cool things which I would like to share here.
